Meet: Jared Canter, Pella of DFW/WTX’s Vice President of Sales

Oh, the power of a $20 bill. Jared Canter remembers it well. He was 12 years old, and he wanted to go to the movies with some friends, so he asked his dad if he could have some money. His dad thought about it for a minute and came up with a different idea.

“He got me a lawnmower and edger instead,” Jared said with a laugh. “My dad said, ‘You know, if you start earning for yourself, you can go to the movies anytime you’d like and create the flexibility and freedom you’re seeking.’”

And, with that, Jared’s entrepreneurial spirit, pride in workmanship, and passion for customer service was born. He started mowing his neighbor’s lawn, and then another neighbors. Soon, word got around about his lawnmowing service, and business started booming. “I was too young to drive so I loaded my mower into my mom’s car; I remember she even charged me for this service to drive home how a business operates! People liked my work -- it was a great business that all started with a discussion around $20.”

Today, lessons learned along life’s journey have catapulted Jared into the role of VP of Sales at Pella of DFW/WTX, an independent distributor. Looking back, Jared said all of his life experiences – personal and professional – have prepared him well for his continued journey.

Meet Trey Raney, Pella of DFW's President

Growing up, Trey Raney enjoyed a blessed childhood. A product of a tight family and a small town of 3,500 people outside of Wichita, Kansas, Trey has always carried with him a work ethic and drive to excel. He was gifted with athletic skills, playing quarterback for the high school football team in the fall and then transitioning to playing guard on the basketball team each spring.

He would go on to take his skills to the next level becoming a two-sport and multiple position athlete at Grinnell College in Iowa, where he earned all-conference honors in football. On the basketball court, he had success as well. He was the guard on a run-and-gun, three-point shot heavy offense. The team was electric, averaging 130 points a game during one season (yes, 130!) Quick trivia: Grinnell was the first D-3 school ever to have a game broadcast live on ESPN and one of the first teams ever to win a game shooting only three-pointers.

“Athletics and competing with and for my teammates taught me a lot,” said Trey. “It’s all about leadership and teamwork and I think sports educated me as much as my classes did. You can be the brightest person in the world, but if you can’t be a great teammate and you can’t motivate others by your actions, then you won’t succeed.”

Bart Shaw of Ibañez Shaw Architecture Reflects on his Journey and Designs

If you’ve seen Pella of DFW’s new experience center in Fort Worth, you likely have said, “wow!” And you wouldn’t be alone. Recently, the architecture firm led by Bart Shaw and Greg Ibañez of Ibañez Shaw Architecture, took home the Fort Worth chapter of the American Institute of Architecture’s top-level award (Honor) for its interior work on Pella of DFW’S experience center. They “wowed” three independent architects who made the selection. What’s more, the duo picked up another Honor Award for their work on 61 Osteria, an Italian restaurant in Fort Worth. And they scooped up two Studio Awards for design work on a boutique hotel, and the 665 S. Main building – a five story office within the shell of an old masonry building.

“If you build it, they will come.”

That’s the famous line from the 1989 Oscar-nominated film, Field of Dreams – a movie about a farmer in Iowa who built a baseball diamond in the middle of a cornfield because he had a vision. For Pella of DFW/West Texas, their own field of dreams lies in Fort Worth and soon Dallas, with their new Experience Centers.

In July the Fort Worth 5,000 square-foot Experience Center had its Grand Opening. A combination of showroom, event center, and builder community space is located close to TCU and the Botanical Gardens, it is a window and door experience that showcases how Pella windows and doors look in an installation – giving builders and homeowners a “real” feel for the products. But there is more…the Center serves as a meeting space with a conference room for local builders, and industry associations. And the Center offers three private meeting rooms, so builders and architects can reserve private space to host clients to go over home projects. Pella of DFW/West Texas also plans to feature “how to” seminars and educational classes to help homeowners with their projects.

“We felt that if we built it, they would come,” said Jared Canter, General Manager for Pella of DFW/West Texas trade/commercial sales. “We wanted to build an inviting Center that not only showcased our products -- along with technical and informational support -- but also create a gathering place for builders. Often, associations in the building community are looking for space to host events, and this is it. We also knew that many builders needed a quiet area to meet with clients and we wanted to accommodate that need as well. This is a unique space for our builders to use, and a way for us to also tell the Pella story, so homeowners can make informed decisions when it comes to windows and doors.”

Pella DFW Annual Dallas Entrepreneur Awards Galaa Trophy

It's nice to be recognized.

SMU Cox School of Business and The Dallas Business Journal have named Pella of DFW/West Texas as one of the Top 100 fastest-growing private companies based in DFW. This award tracks the growth of the past three-year period, making this year's awards extra special because it means these companies proved they could come together to find ways to thrive through the COVID, post-COVID, and global supply chain meltdown eras.

It's an award that makes the Pella of DFW/West Texas team incredibly proud. The days since COVID have pushed them to find new ways to grow. Yet the distributor has grown its business thanks to the local team members providing personal service during very turbulent times.

Trey Raney, Pella DFW/West Texas' VP said the uncertainty was the only certainty during the early days of COVID. "We navigated and followed all the varied guidance of the four counties we work with in the greater Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex, along with areas in West Texas," he said. "We were very concerned about our team members' health and financial well-being – and we deliberately wanted to keep our offices open to serve our customers better. This required thoughtful consideration of the different ways each team member felt comfortable, while fostering a no-judgment-on-personal choice environment. We had daily internal meetings to work through the ever-changing COVID dynamics to ensure proactive communication with our team members and customers. We had to be flexible, and kind, in how we all operated together."
